Failing a course during the freshman year of High School can have long term negative effects for students. This study aims to fill the research gap of course failures and subgroup failures of freshman students in Arkansas. We examine the association of Arkansas’ freshman student course failures with student demographic and programmatic characteristics, prior achievement, and district characteristics. Results are presented by subgroup, course and region and include which courses students are most likely to fail. Research-based recommendations to reduce failure rates will be included.
