While constructing meaning from text may present as effortless for the skilled reader, it is complex and multidimensional. Reading comprehension can pose varied challenges for both the reader and the educator. The science tells us that comprehension is the orchestrated product of multiple language and cognitive processes. The reader’s ability to construct products or indicate what they understand is dependent on their ability to access and apply these necessary skills and knowledge. This realization calls for the design of an informed instructional framework that addresses the development of word and sentence meanings, text structure and background knowledge, and an understanding of what is implied in the text. The blueprint asks the educator to identify and implement related strategies and activities that support the reader’s ability to work with the complexities of text to make meaning. This session will explore the science of reading comprehension and how it can be reflected in effective instructional practices.
